Work at Home Scams

The Internet is full of ads for work at home opportunities promising you thousands of dollars a month for staying at home while doing little or no work. If you are struggling financially, as so many people are, these ads sound like the answer to your dreams.

If you are thinking about investing your time or money in any of these ads, proceed with caution. Not all work at home opportunities deliver on their promises. In fact, a large percentage of them are scams and should be avoided.

Most advertisements for these opportunities deliberately omit certain facts, including only the information that will draw your attention. There is no mention of how many hours you will need to devote to the program or what the total investment costs may be.

Many work at home schemes require you to cover the costs of placing newspaper ads, buying office supplies, etc. This is in addition to whatever start-up fee or initial investment is required. Many people lose thousands of dollars plus their time and energy because they fall prey to these schemes.

There are many of these work at home scams floating around on the Internet. Some of them are listed below:

ASSEMBLY OR CRAFT WORK: Most of these programs tell you how easy it is to produce goods for a company that promises to buy them from you once you complete them, thus earning you a nice weekly income. They fail to tell you how many hours are required in order to produce those items or how much of your money is required as an investment in equipment or supplies, sometimes adding up to hundreds of dollars.

An example of this is a company that pays you to make aprons. You need to either have a sewing machine or purchase one. You may also be required to buy materials to make your aprons. However, after you purchase the materials and equipment and perform the work required, you are not paid.

How can they get away with this? They tell you the work does not meet their “quality standards.” Unfortunately, no work ever done by anyone is “up to standard” leaving you with a loss of income and investment. If you want to sell the items you have made, you are forced to find your own customers.

CHAIN LETTERS: Ads for chain letters tell you to make copies of a certain letter and send that letter to people whose names and addresses are provided. All you are required to do is send ten dollars for a mailing list and labels. You are then shown a chart to see how you can automatically receive thousands of dollars.

In reality, the only people who ever make any money from chain letters are the ones who are at the top of the chain who, by the way, are continually changing names and post office boxes. The person who sends you the chain letter tries to pull you in by claiming to be a successful lawyer who does this on the side and who assures you that there is nothing illegal about chain letters.

ENVELOPE STUFFING: Ads for envelope stuffing have been around for years in various formats. The basic claim is that for a fee, you will be provided with directions to earn money from home simply by stuffing envelopes.

After you make the initial investment, you discover there was never any real employment offer. Instead, you are told how to place ads in newspapers, magazines, online classifieds, etc. The only way for you to earn money is if people respond to your ads.

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING: Ads for MLM programs tell you how you can earn more money than you have ever had in your life. By joining their program it will be possible for you to let others earn money for you while you enjoy your prosperous lifestyle!

Multi-level marketing is a business based on direct sales. It is a solid, well-established, legal form of business that has provided profit for many people who have successfully sold products for reputable companies.

Many illegal pyramid schemes can resemble these legitimate MLM programs. The difference is that instead of selling a product, your primary goal is to recruit others into the program. At some point, everything collapses because the market becomes saturated and only a few people at the top have made money.

MEDICAL BILLING: Ads for medical billing are in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet. The sales pitch says there is a crisis in the health care industry due to the massive task of processing paper claims. Since only a small fraction of the claims are fulfilled electronically, the opportunities in this area are huge.

Supposedly, doctors want to contract out their billing services to save money. This means you should be able to earn a sizable income working from home providing services like billing and accounts receivable. No experience is required and you will be provided with clients. Unfortunately, the reality is that you have to do the selling yourself.

Very few people who invest in a medical billing business are able to find clients and generate an income, let alone recover their investments. The competition in this market is brutal and primarily centers on a few large companies.

Before making any investments in any companies, ask questions, specifically regarding investment amounts and the requirements for running the business. Insist upon receiving contact information for references. Contact those references and speak to them, preferably in person.

If you invest in any work at home opportunity and find that it is not legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. If they will not honor your request, find out the physical address and contact information of the company. You can then make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your local Attorney General’s office. You can also find out if any other complaints have been received for that company.

Avoid Work at Home Scams

In your search for legitimate work at home jobs, you are faced with an overabundance of choices. How do you avoid the scams? Are there any legitimate online jobs available? What questions should you ask?

First of all, always proceed with caution. Most ads for work at home opportunities omit certain facts, including only the information that will draw your attention to the ad. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Do not fall for the easy money trap. Running a work at home business is similar to any other business. It requires hard work, skill, a good product, perseverance, and knowledge of your business.

Beware of the following common work at home scams:

* ASSEMBLY OR CRAFT WORK: Most of these programs tell you how easy it is to produce goods for a company that promises to buy them from you once you complete them, thus earning you a nice weekly income. They fail to tell you how many hours are required in order to produce those items, how much of your money is required as an investment in supplies, and that you will never be paid because no work ever done by anyone is “up to standard”.

*CHAIN LETTERS: You make copies of a certain letter and send that letter to people whose names and addresses are provided. All you are required to do is send ten dollars for a mailing list and labels. You are then shown a chart to see how you can automatically receive thousands of dollars. The only people who ever make any money from chain letters are the ones who are at the top of the chain who, by the way, are continually changing the names and post office boxes.

*ENVELOPE STUFFING: Ads for envelope stuffing have been around for years in various formats.

*MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING: Many illegal pyramid schemes can resemble legitimate MLM programs. Multi-level marketing is a business primarily based on direct sales, not recruiting. The pyramid scheme’s primary goal is to recruit others into the program instead of selling the product. At some point, everything collapses because the market becomes saturated and only a few people at the top have made money.

*MEDICAL BILLING: Ads for medical billing are everywhere. The sales pitch says there is a crisis in the health care industry due to the massive task of processing paper claims. Since only a small fraction of the claims are fulfilled electronically, the opportunities in this area are huge. You are also promised to be provided with clients.

Unfortunately, the reality is that you have to do the selling yourself. Very few people who invest in a medical billing business are able to find clients and generate an income. The competition in this market is brutal and primarily centers on a few large companies.

If you find yourself interested in a home-based opportunity and want to pursue it, acquire as much information as possible about the company. Know who you are dealing with. A legitimate company will have no problem with providing answers to your questions concerning costs, work involved, etc.

Be very clear in your questions regarding the costs involved. Confirm that you are not required to pay for additional fees above and beyond the start-up fee or initial investment. Make sure you know what the refund policy is.

Before making any investments in any companies, insist upon receiving contact information for references. Contact those references and speak to them, preferably in person. Ask them if the company follows through with their claims and if they have any complaints.

It can be very beneficial for you to spend some time researching work at home opportunities. There are many resources available specifically designed to answer your questions regarding online employment.

There are also resources that list legitimate companies that hire people to work from home. A very good source is to search for large company and corporate websites (IBM, Penney’s, Disney, etc.). Whatever store, company or corporation you can think of, they will probably have a website. If they have a website, there will be a link for jobs.

You can also search general employment sites (jobs.com, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, etc.). There are scores of websites for general job searches and there are always some home-based jobs listed.

There are companies that will hire you to split your time between an office and your home. Many major corporations now that offer this kind of flexibility for their employees. You might even be able to convert your present job into a telecommuting one. It never hurts to ask your employer.

Many legitimate home-based opportunities are available, but you must spend some time and effort locating them. Always remember, if you are unsure about an opportunity, ask questions. You will not know if something is a possibility for you unless you get answers to your questions.

If you do invest in a work at home opportunity and discover that it is not legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. If they will not honor your request, find out the physical address and contact information of the company. You can then make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your local Attorney General’s office. You can also find out if any other complaints have been received for that company.

Work at Home Tips

The power of the Internet has made it possible to create an abundance of work at home opportunities. If you have decided you want to start your own home-based business, but don't know where to start, the following information may be helpful.

Because the purpose of starting your own business is to make money and have more time with your family, you do not want to waste your time or money on a scam. What do you look for in a work at home business? How do you know if it is legitimate?

First of all, you must do your own research. Find out all you can about any business opportunities you are interested in. If you have questions about their program, make sure there is someone to answer them. If they are a legitimate company, they will be happy to answer any questions you have.

INVESTMENT: When you are researching a business, be cautious of any investment required. A legitimate and stable company will not charge you for joining their program. Once you join, you can then acquire more information to see if you want to make any investment.

If there IS an investment required, find out if the potential is really there to make money in the business. How long will it take to see a return on the investment? If the program or business is promising you wealth and riches in a short amount of time simply by paying the investment, beware! It takes time and work to build a business and an income, whether it is online or not.

PRODUCT: What will you be selling? Is it an actual product or is it information? If you do not believe in the product or information you are trying to sell, it will be very difficult to sell it to other people. Marketing is hard work and requires your dedication to the product.

SUPPORT: Does the company or business you are interested in provide you with support AFTER you invest in their program? Make sure you will receive ongoing assistance with any questions you may have as you work the program. Their website should have tips and guidelines to help you, especially marketing tips.

ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES:

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS: One of the easiest and most lucrative ways of making money online is to promote other people’s products by becoming their affiliates. Affiliate programs allow you to make money by referring customers to a company’s website. Most successful online merchants use affiliate programs to promote their sites.

Make sure that the affiliate program you are interested in joining has no start up fee. There are thousands of affiliate programs out there to choose from that are free to join. The best programs to join are the ones that have a generous payment structure, no less than 25% commission. Since you are doing the hard work of promoting someone else’s product, your commission should be a substantial one.

EBAY: If you do not have a website, one of the easiest and most profitable ways of making money online is with eBay. It is the largest online auction site, drawing millions of people every day. It is the first place most people check out when they are looking for items, both new and used. You can sell almost anything you can think of.

The best places to find items to resell on eBay are garage and yard sales, estate sales, and local auctions. You should also use your newspaper classifieds section. You can find terrific bargains there. Bargain hunting can become your new “business”, a very lucrative one.

ADDITIONAL ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES:

COMPANY AND CORPORATE WEBSITES: (IBM, Penney’s, Disney, etc.) Whatever store, company or corporation you can think of, they will probably have a website. If they have a website, there will be a link for jobs.

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT SITES: (jobs.com, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, etc.) There are many websites for general job searches. Just do a search for JOBS and you are on your way.

ONLINE NEWSPAPER CLASSIFIED ADS: Whatever newspaper you can think of, they will most likely have a website. You can also do a general search for NEWSPAPER CLASSIFIEDS and you will get hundreds of links.

WORK-AT-HOME DIRECTORY LISTINGS: If you do a search for WORK AT HOME, you will receive thousands of possibilities. Beware of scams!

The only requirements to finding a job online are time, commitment and perseverance. If you stick with it and stay focused, you WILL find something that works for you. There ARE jobs out there and there are good jobs out there. Hopefully, the tips listed above will help you in your search for legitimate home-based jobs.

Work At Home Business

We all know that in order to strike it rich in the business world we need to formulate a unique idea, that has never been created before, and make a business out of it. Even though many people have done just that, many people who operate a work at home business, suffer from failure. This is not because their idea is not unique, it generally has to do with the fact that many people do not really know how to operate a work at home business, even the smallest basics.

When you have decided to operate a work at home business, the first thing you should think about how you will legally operate your business. You will have to decided between four different choices and these are Corporation, limited partnership, partnership, or sole proprietorship.

Sole proprietorship is the best choice for someone operating a work at home business, for the simple fact that you are looking to break free of your current job and experience independence and freedom that you had never had in your life.

A Successful Work at Home Business

The first and most important aspect of operating a successful business is having a good rein on the expenses. You do not want to start on the wrong foot. Many people believe that the legal costs, expensive furniture, or a flashy office determines success. However, the good rule of thumb is to avoid purchases that do not protect your investment or fails to make you any money.

Sole proprietorship is chosen for many reasons, one is you have the ability to invest anything and everything without having to protect that investment with a corporation. If any protection is needed you have it within the Federal Bankruptcy Act home provision. Thanks to this act, some areas of your life is protected such as portion of your home’s equity, vehicle, personal belongings, and household items.

However, becoming a partner or sole proprietor of a work at home business does not exclude you from taxes. You will still have taxes similar to when you were at a hourly or salary paid employment. Some people choose a corporation because within the laws you have the ability to manipulate the salary you earn to save money during tax time.

If you own a work at home business and incorporate it, there are disadvantages to this as well. Typically when you incorporate a business, there are a variety of legal papers needed when you make major changes within the business. You also need to undertake extremely elaborate account methods, higher taxes, as well as strict operation laws when it comes to your work at home business.

Work At Home Mom Opportunity

When it comes to work at home moms and opportunity, there is no shortage in supply. Many people choose the route of a home based business opportunity. This allows you to sell a product or operate your own business, a fast and steady trend is the world of affiliate programs. Thanks to the internet, this trend is showing no signs of slowing.

Yes, there are many work at home moms that have grasped the opportunity to work at home, breaking free of the nine to five desk job. However, for whatever reason, many other women have not yet taken the opportunity to become a work at home mom, therefore there are many opportunities available. Some women might shy away from becoming a work at home mom, because the opportunity of a home based business does not always provide a steady paycheck or guarantee success. Furthermore, even if considered a work at home mom, it does not always mean that the opportunity you grasp, will keep you at home twenty-four-seven.

Time away from home

In general, a work at home mom will have to spend some amount of time outside of the home sharing the opportunity with others. For example, if you were involved in a Direct Mail Service opportunity, you may have to drive around town finding other businesses that would use your service. Almost any opportunity will require you to travel away from home occasionally.

Freelancer

The opportunity of a freelancer has appealed to many work at home moms. This has proven to be a fabulous method of earning an extra income, while staying at home much of the time. Freelancing covers a large amount of opportunities such as telecommuting or home-based business. As a work at home mom taking advantage of the freelance opportunity, you will be able to take advantage of the flexibility offered to most business owners. Generally, as a freelancer you are not selling any products. Essentially, you are selling yourself and the skills you posses.

To become a freelancer, you must possess a skill that is developed, valuable, and marketable all at the same time. You must be able to provide a service to companies that is needed and let them know you are the one they need. Many companies both large and small are looking for freelancers for different projects. There are many reasons they do this. For example, they may be looking for a cheaper route or perhaps they do not have an employee capable of doing that specific project. Many work at home moms are taking the freelance opportunity to get involved with web programming or website design.

Working Mothers - Stay At Home, And Make Money

A father of two daughters, I am blessed with joy, laughter and tears brought by these little angels. I once had someone told me,” We don’t ‘make’ our children, we merely received them from the Creator.” That made me think about the new responsibilities I will now have to oblige!

Life in the modern times of fast pace and demanding changes is by no means easy for working mothers, as they try to balance work and time with the closest thing in their new life - their baby. Whether you are a single mother or otherwise, it does demands good time management, and a great deal of energy to keep up with the work and family. For the many mothers who has or is going through this, would understand.

Time spent away from the child, does harbors concerns beyond the money factor, like welfare of the child, psychological and physical well being. Also, thinks of the things that they could be missing, their baby’s first word, the first step…things that will only come once our life time, those sweet valuable moments.

The sacrifices many working mothers made are the most noble, in my view, striving to improve the quality of live for their family. The need for financial stability and independence is obvious, but so are the solutions available to help these women achieve a “best of the both world”. One can now have the opportunity to work from home, with the help of technologies. A revolutionary industry has sprung up all across the world with the help of the Internet. This has been proven to help many mothers stay at home while they make unbelievable amount of money on line. The new found knowledge has help many women achieve financial success, sometimes even over shadowing their male counter part or spouse. The ingrained motherly nature actually makes a woman more focused and committed to realize their goals. Such is the portrayal of the power of Motherly Love, to protect and defend its young.

Humans adapts, in the new world, there will naturally be new ways to make money, be it full or part time. But the duties and cycle of life is ancient and unchanged. So, working mothers, you can be also be staying at home to enjoy the “best of both worlds”.

Internet Work At Home Scams - Little Frogs In A Big Pond

Copyright 2006 Elaine Currie

An online advertisement for an e-book on the subject of avoiding Internet work at home scams started me wondering about just how dangerous working at home on the Internet might be. I stumbled across the advertisement by accident. I have to confess I was doing just what I warn everyone else not to do - allowing myself to get sidetracked in the middle of doing some work instead of making a bookmark and returning later!.

An advertisement saying something along the lines of "Secret tips to foil the scammers" caught my eye. Forgetting all about the fate of the nosey feline, I clicked the ad and started reading what turned out to be a long sales letter for a downloadable e-book on the subject of avoiding Internet work at home scams. That was a fatal mistake because there's no stopping half way through for me: whether I want the product or not, I just have to read to the end.

The discovery that the author was asking just short of $25 for an e-book about Internet scams, made me wonder whether this could be a scam. You will see it all the time on the Internet: people offer to sell you e-books containing "secrets", but when you download the book you find it is full of tips that should be obvious to anyone with half a brain cell and information that you could pick up online free of charge. Would this turn out to be just another case of a promise to sell secrets that turn out to be no more than a collection of free information much of which is blindingly obvious? I'll never know unless someone tells me because I have no intention of paying to download this e-book simply to satisfy a passing curiosity. If I can't recognise most types Internet scam after being online for over two years… Actually, I wouldn't still be here if I couldn't recognise them by now.

How to avoid Internet scams is a lesson I learned without the benefit of an e-book telling me how to do it. Most of the lesson was easy and came free as one of the perks of being a compulsive reader: this involved reading tons of free articles. If you type "Internet scams" into a search engine, you will find hours of fascinating reading.

Another part of the lesson came through buying into a few scam programs (you know, the old too good to be true syndrome) and noticing the features to avoid when considering programs in the future. This part wasn't free (ouch!) but these were early days' mistakes and, although they seem foolish now, it is easy to understand how they happened. I suppose the experience qualifies me to become the author of my own "how to avoid Internet work at home scams" e-book but does the world need another book on the subject of avoiding work at home scams? How big is the problem of work at home scams?

The figures I found were quite surprising: in 2005, fraud complaints received by the FTC were broken down as follows:

1. Identity Theft - 37%

2. Internet Auctions - 12%

3. Foreign Money Offers - 8%

4. Shop-at-Home/Catalog Sales - 8%

5. Prizes/Sweepstakes and Lotteries - 7%

6. Internet Services and Computer Complaints - 5%

7. Advance-Fee Loans and Credit Protection - 2%

8. Business Opportunities and Work-at-Home plans - 2%

9. Telephone Services - 2%

10.Others - 17%

The figures do not distinguish between Internet work at home scams and offline work at home scams but it's probably a safe bet that the majority of that 2% of complaints relates to Internet based work at home scams.

Seeing work at home scams put into perspective makes working on the Internet seem a lot less dangerous. Less dangerous that is apart from the fact that working at home on the Internet will inevitably lead us into situations where we could become the prey of identity thieves and they are the real pike in our pool. Identity theft is a lot more frightening than Internet work at home scams. If you are scammed it will probably cost you very little unless you are very unlucky. Sometimes the loss won't even be financial, it will involve wasted time. If, however, you become the victim of identity theft, you could find yourself penniless and in jail even though you are completely innocent of any crime.

No, I don't think I would pay for a book on the subject of work at home scams but a book about identity theft? Now that's a different story.

Finding The Right Work At Home Opportunity

Choose the right work at home business opportunity to reach your goals.

Choosing the right work at home business to start or join can be a daunting task. However, if you do your homework and thoroughly investigate it, the choice can be much easier. Finding a good, legitimate work at home opportunity for a newcomer is really easy once you know where to find them. Look for them where all of the successful internet marketers are hanging out! Do a Google search for “internet marketing forum” or “affiliate marketing forum” or “work at home business” or “work at home opportunity”. When you enter a forum, look for how fresh the content is. If most of the posts are from today or the day before, then you are probably in a good spot. Once you are in the forum, you can try to search the forum for the name of the work at home opportunity you are interested in and read what others are saying about it. If there is nothing about your particular prospect or you do not have one, do not worry. A good, active forum will present you with numerous opportunities.

Resist the urge to join the forum and ask a general question like “how do I make money online”? That question is probably asked daily and may get ignored or answered in general terms or worse. What you are looking for here are the answers to your questions and also the more experienced members that are generally helpful to the newbie. Start out by looking for threads that may have the answers you are looking for. When reading the posts by more experienced members, look down at the bottom of their post for what is called a signature. This is usually a link to that members’ web site and often a work at home business that you can also join. While at a member’s site, most likely you can join their newsletter or some subscription they offer and, in addition, look for a way to contact them other than the forum. If their e-mail is listed or even a phone number, then get in touch with them and ask any questions you may have about the program they promote. This should give you a feel for how helpful they will be if you join their program. You may have not only found a good work at home opportunity but also a great mentor.

I cannot stress enough the role a few good forums will play, not only in choosing the right work at home business, but also what they offer in helping you on your way to a good, solid income and reaching your goals.
